Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October isn’t just about pumpkin spice lattes and football. It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month and scammers are getting wicked with texts blowing up your phone. We have learned a lot over the years about identity theft. Sadly, it is such a common occurrence but we are getting smarter. We know that cybercriminals love urgency. They’re all about “Click now!” and “Pay immediately!” and “Your account will be suspended!” and “You may have legal action taken against you!” Blah, blah, blah.
The next time a suspicious text comes in with a ding, take a deep breath. Relax a little. Then hit “delete.” If you have a little time on your hands, please mark it as junk first and report it to the FTC to help protect others.
Things to remember (along with buying candy before trick-or-treating mayhem):
– Use strong passwords and update them at least monthly. Password123! won’t cut it. Get complicated.
– Turn on multi-factor authorization (MFA). It’s like a seatbelt for your online life.
– Update your devices. There’s nothing hackers love more than an outdated app. Well … okay, they love your money more so I take that back.
– Pause before you click anything. If it smells phishy, it probably is garbage.
– Help spread the word. If you get a scammy text and you’re worried a child or parent would accidentally click a link in it, let them know something is going around before it’s too late.
Stay guarded. Stay well. And enjoy those pumpken spiced lattes before they disappear from the menu!
